CommonAngels is a hybrid angel partnership and Fund coinvesting together in early-stage information technology startups predominately in the Boston Area. We take the best of a fund and the best of angel partners and combine them to benefit the entrepreneurs we back. CommonAngels is currently investing out of its $13 million Fund with an eight-person Investment Committee to speed the decision-making process for the Fund’s investments.
The Partners of CommonAngels are current and former entrepreneurs and senior executives of technology companies. We have a passion for working with great entrepreneurs and building valuable companies. Our partners, the investors who comprise CommonAngels, lend knowledge and experience to the companies we invest in, and support the growth process. Our Fund provides cohesion within CommonAngels, augments and coordinates our partners’ investments, and enables a quicker process for entrepreneurs. The Fund’s investments and returns are driven by our commitment to identifying high-potential investment opportunities and exceptional entrepreneurs and investing in seed and Series A stage companies.
Since our founding in 1998, we have invested in over 60 companies and worked with countless startup teams. We’ve been in your shoes and experienced many of the issues surrounding high growth technology startups.
We invest and work closely with talented entrepreneurs looking to build great businesses. Our investments fall into two general categories, although the lines between the two are admittedly blurred.
Series A rounds: we catalyze these financing rounds for entrepreneurs, bringing our expertise and connections to the table.
Small seed investments: our Fund makes small seed investments to help entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground.
We do not run companies. We are entrepreneur-friendly and through our partners, we provide resources, contacts, industry expertise, and appropriate financing to startup companies. Our greatest value is the network of relationships and support we can provide our entrepreneurs.
First and foremost, we invest in great entrepreneurs with great ideas. Second, we invest in areas we feel we can add value, and for us, this is the wide canvas of the information technology business. Software, internet, digital media, and mobile sectors are just some of the broad areas we focus on. We are also proficient investors in the B2B, consumer, and SMB markets.
We are not thematic investors; however, the technologies and market forces driving a cycle of innovation definitely influences our thinking.
We do not invest in life sciences, medical devices, or energy production, or businesses that require a lot of upfront capital ($5 - $10M) before validating the concept.
We invest in businesses located in New England, New York, and occasionally eastern Canada.
