Maia joins CommonAngels with a 15-year background in venture capital and angel investing. A CommonAngels member since 2006 and on the Board of Directors since 2009, she joins James Geshwiler as Senior Managing Director of CommonAngels. Throughout her 21-year career as a VC and technology banker, Maia has invested in and financed numerous start-up and growth companies, and has committed capital to venture funds. She was a Managing Director at BancBoston Ventures for 10 years, and eventually headed BancBoston Ventures within Bank of America’s Global Private Equity Group, post acquisition.
Most recently Maia was a Managing Director at Shott Capital Management, a $2.7Bn discretionary, separate-accounts manager specializing in selecting VC and PE funds for LP commitments for institutional clients. In addition to partnership selection, she was active with fund portfolio management and was an Advisory Board member for 6 funds.
Prior to joining Shott in 2010, Maia spent almost 20 years at the banks that ultimately became Bank of America. She joined Bank of Boston in 1989 in a risk assessment and audit role. From 1993 through 2008, Maia was involved in corporate finance, private equity, and venture capital pursuits. Her focus in the technology sector started in Palo Alto in 1993 as a technology lender providing creative financing solutions for corporate growth, acquisition, and LBOs for PE firms. She also co-invested passive equity for the Bank alongside PE sponsors in technology buy-out transactions.
In 1999 Maia opened the Palo Alto office for BancBoston Ventures, the venture capital subsidiary of Bank of Boston, where she developed the strategy, built the team, and invested in start-ups and venture capital funds. Her venture investments included Docent (IPO), Generations Network (Ancestory.com, IPO), MarketAxess (IPO), OnDisplay, (IPO) QPass (acquired by Amdocs), and Versata (IPO). In 2002 Maia returned to Boston and eventually headed BancBoston Ventures within Bank of America's global private equity group. Maia was a Board member of Watchfire, WebCT, NetKey, and Inventa, and a Board observer of Arbinet-TheExchnage, BuyerZone, InQuira, Iowa Telecom and others.
In 2006 Maia formed DeVere Management Group to make personal venture capital investments in private, high-growth companies. In connection with her investments, she currently sits on the boards of Apperian, Fiksu, and Wymsee, and was previously on the board of Linkable Networks. Maia joined CommonAngels in 2006, joined the Board in 2009, served as Chairman from 2010 -2011, and remains on the Board today in her capacity as Senior Managing Director. Maia’s personal investments include: Apperian, Blaze (acquired by AKAM), CardStar (acquired by CTCT), docTrakr, Fiksu, HelpScout, inStream Media,, InQuira (acquired by ORCL), Ironwood (IRWD), Linkable Networks, Nimbit (acquired by PreSonus), N-of-One, PowerHouse Dynamics, Promoboxx, PracticallyGreen, ProctorCam, SmartCells (acquired by MRK), Wymsee, YieldBot, and Xconomy.
Maia received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Wellesley College and was elected into Phi Beta Kappa. She serves on the board of The Jericho Road Project, a non-profit that connects business professionals to non-profit organizations. Maia lives in Concord with her husband, two sons, and yellow lab puppy, Milly. She enjoys spending her free time in southern Vermont hiking, biking and skiing.
